In the Bible, there is a short story about Jesus and his disciples arriving at the home of Mary and Martha.
When they arrived, Martha immediately jumped into action, “distracted by all the preparations.”
Mary, on the other hand, sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to what he said.
When Martha became frustrated and came to Jesus asking him to tell Mary to help, he responded, “Mary has chosen what is better.”
This is a story I have been sharing in churches all summer long. But it is not a message that requires us to have any specific faith or non-faith background to see the relevance of it in our lives.
To live a life where we “choose what is better” should be the desire of all of us. In all things.
After all, our lives are filled with choices each and every day.
We choose where to give our attention.
We choose where to spend our time.
We choose how to spend our money.
We choose what we bring into our homes.
We choose what to fill our minds with.
We choose how to treat the people around us.
All of life’s resources are finite. And because of that, every day is filled with both big and small decisions about how we choose to use them.
The wisest choice we can ever make is to choose what is better with the resources that we have.Indeed, there may be nothing more important about us.
